Apple News is a fine default. It’s on the phone already, For You is readable, and Apple News+ is a legitimate magazine kiosk if you actually want magazines. Most “alternatives” articles skip that and go straight to the dunk. Not this one.
People look for a way out anyway, and they are not looking for the same way out. Some of them aren’t even on an iPhone. The right alternative depends on which problem you actually have.

First, figure out why you’re leaving
In practice it’s almost always one of four:
- You’re on Android. Apple News is not there. There is no port coming. Searching “Apple News alternative” from a Pixel is a platform question, not a taste question.
- You hate For You. The algorithm is ranking for engagement — reading time, taps, topics you’ve indicated. It is good at keeping you in the app. That is not the same as briefing you and letting you leave.
- You don’t want News+ prices. News+ is not a separate app. It’s a paid magazines-and-newspapers subscription inside Apple News. If you came for a daily briefing and the paywall is for The New Yorker, you’re in the wrong aisle.
- You wanted summaries, not a newsstand. Apple News sends you toward articles and issues. Twelve outlets on one event is still twelve things to open. A clustering app is a different job.
Here’s who’s best for each.
If you’re on Android (Apple News simply isn’t)
This is the shortest section because the constraint is a door, not a preference.

Google News — the other default. On Android the standalone News app was folded into the Google app in 2023; news.google.com still exists. Ground News — fully available on Android if the reason you liked Apple News was “lots of sources” and the reason you’re leaving is you want those sources labeled left/center/right.
1440 — still an email. Works on any phone. No For You, no News+, no Apple ID.
Slow News Co. is Apple-only, so it is not an Android answer. Particle is iOS-first; Android is still in beta.
If you hate For You
1. Wisp — you pick the topics; the feed is chronological; nothing is ranked to hold you. One summary per event, written without outrage language, then it ends. That’s the structural opposite of For You, not a reskin of it. Free on iOS too.
2. 1440 — human-edited daily digest, same for everyone, calm language, five minutes. The algorithm problem disappears because there isn’t one. The personalization problem appears instead. Full 1440 review.
3. Slow News Co. — human-edited, deliberately finite, Apple-only. If you want out of For You but want to stay in Apple’s world with people choosing a small set of stories, this is the most radical version of that. It will not replace Apple News’ firehose. That’s the point.
4. Feedly — chronological RSS, sources you choose, no ranking layer. Power-user exit. You do the deduplication.
What usually does not fix For You: Flipboard or Google News. Flipboard is a different costume on discovery. Google News is For You with Google’s signals instead of Apple’s. If the ranking loop is the complaint, swapping ranking loops is a hobby.
If you don’t want to pay for News+
News+ is worth it if you read the magazines and newspapers in the bundle. It is not worth it as a “nicer briefing.” The briefing was never the paid part — For You is free. The paid part is the kiosk.
Free exits that actually brief:
- 1440 — the five-minute email. Advertising-supported, clearly marked, no Apple subscription.
- Wisp — free, no paywalled tier. Summaries of your topics, not a magazine rack.
- AllSides — free left/center/right comparison on the web, if what you wanted from “more sources” was perspective rather than The Atlantic.
Particle has a free tier; the distinctive extras push you toward Particle+. Ground News is the same shape: free to browse, paid for the features that make it Ground News. Don’t leave a subscription to join a similar one by accident.
If you wanted summaries, not magazines
This is the mix-up Apple News+ creates. The app looks like a reading product. People who wanted “tell me what happened today” bounce off issues of New York magazine.
Wisp — event summaries, clustered from multiple outlets, one write-up, done.

Apple News vs Flipboard, since that’s the other search
Flipboard is the magazine-style aggregator people put next to Apple News: you follow topics, publishers, and “magazines,” and you flip through covers. It’s cross-platform. Apple News is prettier on an iPhone you already own and adds News+ as a real publications bundle. Flipboard is the one you can use on Android without changing ecosystems.
Neither one is trying to get you to close the app. If the comparison you actually needed was “discovery feed A vs discovery feed B,” pick on platform and whether you like Flipboard’s covers. If the comparison you needed was “get me out of discovery,” neither wins.

- Leaving because you’re on Android → Wisp, Google News, Flipboard, or SmartNews — not a mythical Apple News APK
- Leaving because For You is the problem → Wisp, 1440, or Slow News Co. (Apple-only)
- Leaving because News+ feels like the wrong purchase → you probably wanted a briefing; 1440 or Wisp, not another kiosk
