Google News is still good at being Google News. That’s worth saying up front, because most “alternatives” articles begin by pretending the incumbent is terrible. It isn’t. It aggregates a huge range of publishers, the briefing features are genuinely convenient, and for a lot of people it’s already on the phone.
People search for alternatives anyway, and the reasons differ. The right alternative depends entirely on which one is yours.
A product note before the list, because the search results are messy: Google folded the standalone Google News Android app into the Google app in 2023. news.google.com is still there. The iOS Google News app is still there. What didn’t change is the product idea — an engagement-ranked aggregator. On Android, “open Google News” now mostly means “open Google.” That’s inconvenient. It isn’t, by itself, a reason the remaining product is bad.
One disclosure: Wisp is our app. We’ll tell you where it doesn’t fit.
First, figure out why you’re leaving
In practice it’s almost always one of these:
- The algorithm is the problem. The feed is ranked for engagement across Google’s properties — search history, location, taps. It is very good at showing you more of what you already react to. If that’s why you feel worse after reading the news, a different aggregator with a similar ranking loop will feel the same.
- You wanted summaries, not a headline pile. Twelve outlets covering one event is twelve cards. Google will summarize some of them. It will not collapse the event into one thing you can finish.
- You wanted bias tools. Google News does not show left/center/right coverage as a product. If that’s the job, you left the wrong aisle.
- You wanted local, and the personalization isn’t helping. National politics keeps winning the ranking. Local is in there; it isn’t the center of gravity.
Here’s who’s best for each.
If you want off the engagement feed
1. Wisp — full disclosure, this is our app, so weight accordingly. You pick topics. Wisp reads the outlets covering them, clusters duplicate coverage into single events, and writes one neutral summary per event. Chronological feed, no algorithm, no infinite scroll, no outrage language. Where Google News answers “what else might you tap?”, Wisp answers “what happened on the topics you follow?” — and then ends. Free, iOS and Android.
2. 1440 — a free daily email digest, edited by humans, same edition for everyone, calm language, about five minutes, then it stops. No app, no ranking, no Google account. The limitation is the flip side of the simplicity: if your interests are specific, most of it isn’t for you. Full 1440 review.
3. Feedly (or any good RSS reader) — raw feeds from sources you choose, in the order they published, with no ranking layer at all. The oldest calm-news technology in existence. The catch: twenty sources covering one event gives you twenty copies. You become the clustering algorithm. If you’ve tried RSS and drowned, that’s why.
If you still want an aggregator, just not Google’s
4. Apple News — the other default. Preinstalled on iPhone, For You is still an algorithm, and Apple News+ is a paid magazines-and-newspapers tier inside the same app, not a separate product. Nicer to look at than Google News. Not available on Android. If For You is specifically what you’re trying to leave, this is a lateral move — we wrote Apple News alternatives for that exit. If you just want a polished feed on an iPhone you already own, it’s the convenient one.
5. SmartNews — a mass-market discovery app with a huge publisher catalog, a For You-style mix of curation and machine learning, and local news treated as first-class. Free and ad-supported, iOS and Android. If what you liked about Google News was finding stories you didn’t know to search for — especially nearby — SmartNews is the closer cousin than any calm-news app. Our SmartNews review is the honest long version. It will not get you off an engagement feed.
6. Yahoo News — the comparison people still type. It’s the same job: an old headline aggregator, portal-shaped, less tightly bound to your search history than Google’s. Switching Google News for Yahoo News is rearranging furniture in the same room. If the room is the problem, this isn’t the move.
If you wanted bias comparison or a different kind of summary
7. Ground News — left/center/right coverage of the same story, factuality ratings, Blindspot behind the paywall. Fully available on Android, unlike a lot of the calm-news category. This is a media-literacy tool, not a quieter Google News. If that’s actually why you’re here, start with Ground News alternatives so you don’t buy a second aggregator by accident.
8. Particle — AI summaries, a chatbot, Opposite Sides for political framing. iOS-first, Android still in beta. Feature-maximalist where Wisp is minimalist. If you want Google’s firehose compressed and some bias context in one app, it’s the hybrid. If features accumulate into noise, it isn’t.
The Android-specific version of this question
On Android, the “Google News alternative” search often means something blunter: the old app icon went away, and living inside the Google app feels like a downgrade.
That’s a real annoyance. It doesn’t change the menu much:
- Wisp and Ground News are full-strength on Android.
- SmartNews and Feedly are too.
- Apple News is not an alternative here. It doesn’t exist on the platform.
- 1440 is still an email, which on Android is sometimes the calmest “app” you can get.
We keep a dedicated list for this: The Best News Apps for Android in 2026.
The honest summary
- Leaving because the feed makes you anxious → Wisp or 1440, not another ranked aggregator
- Leaving because you want one summary per event → Wisp; Particle if you also want the chatbot and spectrum charts
- Leaving because you want bias labels → Ground News
- Leaving because local and discovery matter more than calm → SmartNews
- Leaving because you want total control → Feedly, if you’ll do your own deduplication
- Leaving the Google app on Android and hoping Apple News will save you → it won’t; it’s not there
- Not sure you’re leaving, just comparing the other giant → Apple News on iPhone, Yahoo News only if you like portals
Google News is still the right answer for zero-effort convenience. The alternatives are for people who have decided convenience is the thing that’s costing them. The mechanics of that trade are in Curated News vs. Algorithmic Feeds.

Questions people actually ask
What is the best Google News alternative?
It depends why you're leaving. For calm topic summaries instead of an engagement feed, Wisp. For bias comparison, Ground News. For a finite daily briefing, the 1440 newsletter. For local discovery, SmartNews. For raw source control, Feedly. Google News is still the convenient default if zero setup is the actual goal.
What is a good alternative to Google News that isn't an engagement feed?
Wisp clusters coverage of topics you follow into one neutral summary per event, chronological, no algorithm and no infinite scroll. 1440 is a free daily email that ends after about five minutes. Feedly is chronological RSS from sources you choose, with no ranking layer — you do the deduplication yourself.
Is Apple News better than Google News?
Better at being Apple News: nicer layout, magazines via News+, and it's already on the iPhone. Not better at being calmer — For You is still an engagement algorithm. Google News is available in more places, including the web and Android via the Google app. If you're on Android, Apple News isn't an option. We wrote a dedicated Apple News alternatives guide if that's the comparison you actually need.
Google News vs Yahoo News — which is better?
They're the same job done by two old aggregators. Google News personalizes harder using your Google account and search history. Yahoo News is a more traditional portal of headlines. Neither is a calm-news product, and switching from one to the other rarely fixes the reason people search for an alternative.
Is there a Google News alternative for Android?
Yes. Wisp, Ground News, SmartNews, and Feedly are all on Android. Apple News is not. The standalone Google News Android app was folded into the Google app in 2023, so the default Android experience already lives there — alternatives are other Play Store apps or a newsletter, not a resurrection of the old Google News icon.
